Who we are

Northwich Biogas is a modern renewable energy facility transforming local food and drink by‑products into clean, low‑carbon energy. Our work supports the UK’s transition to greener heating, strengthens energy security and provides a sustainable outlet for local industry by‑products that would otherwise go to waste.

Backed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) - one of the world’s leading renewable energy investors - we’re focused on delivering a reliable, well‑managed facility that benefits both the region and the wider energy network.

At a glance

We’re transforming an existing industrial site into a dedicated biogas facility that produces renewable energy for the UK gas grid.

Using local by‑products, modern technology and strict environmental controls, we deliver cleaner energy with long‑term benefits for the Northwich community.

  • Northwich Biogas turns local food and drink by‑products into clean, renewable energy. Our purpose is simple: use local resources to power a low‑carbon future.

We’re upgrading an existing industrial site into a modern biogas facility that is projected to:

    • Convert 170,000 tonnes of organic by‑products each year

    • Produce 232 GWh of biomethane for the UK gas grid

    • Capture 28,100 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ for industrial use

    • Reuse digestate as a nutrient‑rich fertiliser where permitted

All of this takes place within a sealed, carefully controlled system designed for efficiency, safety and environmental responsibility - delivering reliable green energy with minimal impact on the local community.

  • The site is already home to infrastructure suitable for anaerobic digestion and is located within an established industrial area. By reusing and upgrading this brownfield site, we minimise environmental impact and avoid the need for new large‑scale development.

This approach reduces waste, reduces emissions, and supports the circular economy - keeping valuable resources in use and out of landfill.

  • We aim to be a facility the community can rely on and feel confident about.

    That includes:

    • Creating and supporting local jobs

    • Working with local suppliers and businesses

    • Providing educational visits and opportunities to learn about renewable energy

    • Establishing a community benefit fund once operational

    • Operating within strict environmental and safety standards

We want this project to be a long‑term positive asset for Northwich - environmentally, economically and socially.

  • CIP manages over €28 billion in renewable energy investments and has more than 700 employees across 12 offices worldwide. Their experience in developing and operating major green energy projects ensures the Northwich facility is built and run to the highest standards.

The benefits

Our work delivers cleaner energy, supports local industry and provides lasting benefits for the Northwich community.

Clean Energy

The Northwich facility is projected to produce 232 GWh of biomethane each year - enough renewable gas to heat over 10,000 homes annually. This helps strengthen the UK’s low‑carbon energy network.

Useful Biogenic CO₂

The plant is expected to capture 28,100 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ every year. This purified CO₂ can be supplied to food, beverage and manufacturing industries, reducing reliance on fossil‑derived alternatives.

Environment

We convert organic by‑products into renewable biomethane, reducing waste and replacing fossil‑derived gas in the grid to support the UK’s climate goals.

Community Benefits

Once operational, the project plans to offer educational site visits, share knowledge about renewable energy, and establish a community benefit fund to support local initiatives.
